The Aftermath...

As the dust literally settles following the terrorist strikes on  The World Trade Center in New York, The Pentagon and Pittsburgh - some of the quotes....

man leaps to certain death from the blazing WTC

Picture - Richard Drew/The Associated Press

A person jumps headfirst to certain death from the north tower of the World Trade Center. This horrific sight was repeated in the moments after the planes struck the towers.

"We stayed up all night at the hospital waiting for casualties that never came."

Unknown staff nurse at New York's Bellvue Hospital, where they treated  only a handful of survivors of the WTC disaster.

"Only in my heart."

Unknown Italian woman at the Wall of Prayers outside New York's Bellvue Hospital, when asked if she knew anyone featured in the hundreds of missing persons photos. She had stopped to re-light one of the many prayer candles in front of the wall.

"Every nation in every region now has a decision to make : Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

US President George W. Bush in his address to Congress.

"There is a land of the living and a land of the dead, and the bridge is love."

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, quoting Thornton Wilder at a memorial service in New York for victims of the atrocity.

"Grief is the price we pay for love."

British  Ambassador Sir Christopher Meyer, reading a message of sympathy from HM The Queen at the same memorial service in New York.

"Suddenly the days are not our own.
There's a new "we" in the place of  "I."
The map of our hearts has changed.
There's a new "here" in the place of "there."
And the pain is part of the difference.
And the anger is part of the landscape.
This island of grief is new to us.
The things that brought us here are not.
But the days are not our own.
In the place of me, I put you.
In the place of there, I put here.
That's the difference - that's all."

"The IRA sending a  message of sympathy to America is like Jack the Ripper giving us a lesson in the sanctity of life."

British  newspaper columnist Simon Heffer.

"We have to drain the swamp they live in."

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, pledging to destroy Osama Bin Laden's terrorist network.

"If the Americans go to war I pity those boys - Vietnam will be a picnic by comparison."

Former Soviet colonel  Yuri Shamanov, who fought in Afghanistan.

"I do not believe my son was one of the hijackers. He was afraid of flying."

Father of hijack suspect Mohammed Atta.

"We don't have any new instructions from the federal government, so from now on, we're on our own. Sometimes a potential hijacker will announce that he has a bomb. There are no bombs on this aircraft and if someone were to get up and make that claim, don't believe him.

"If someone were to stand up, brandish something such as a plastic knife and say, 'This is a hijacking', or words to that effect, here is what you should do. Everyone should stand up and immediately throw things at that person - pillows, books, magazines, eyeglasses, shoes, anything that will throw him off balance and distract him. If he has a confederate or two, do the same with them.

Most important : Get a blanket over him, then wrestle him to the floor and keep him there. We'll land the plane at the nearest airport and the authorities will take it on. Remember, there will be one of him and maybe a few confederates but there are 200 of you.

Now, since we're a family for the next few hours, I'll ask you to turn to the person next to you, introduce yourself, tell them a little about yourself and ask them to do the same."

Un-named United Airlines 737 captain to his  passengers over the tannoy on a flight out of Denver, Colorado, in the wake of the WTC and other terrorist attacks on the USA. The passengers sat in silence during the brave speech, then applauded.

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
