1913-1934
1913 Arthur returns to Dublin and marries Kitty McShane on 25 November 1913. Both work with "The Barnstorming Company" touring Ireland. 1914 War declared with Germany. Arthur develops his back-street Irish washerwoman character in the famous comedy sketch "COME OVER". Tours Ireland in various reviews performing the sketch, with his wife playing his daughter. 1915 Kitty McShane gives birth to a boy - Donald Daniel Towle on 2 October 1915, in Dublin. 1916 Sinn Fein Easter Uprising in Dublin on 24 April 1916. 1917 Arthur writes and stars with Kitty in a pantomime - "LITTLE JACK HORNER", opening in Dublin on 7 January 1917, running for three months. 1918 Arthur writes and stars with Kitty in another pantomime - "RED RIDING HOOD", in Ireland. Arthur buys his first car - a model 'T' Ford for the princely sum of £12. Arthur and Kitty return to England performing their "COME OVER" sketch at the Argyle Theatre in Birkenhead and various other venues throughout the country.
1922 Lucan and McShane are offered a pantomime - "BABES IN THE WOOD", at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow, which runs until February 1923.
1923 The couple undertake their first overseas tour, taking them through South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Ironically, the tour opened at The Tivoli Theatre in South Africa, which shared the same name as the theatre in Kingston-upon-Hull, where Arthur collapsed and died thirty one years later. This tour saw the introduction of the famous "THE OLD MATCHSELLER" sketch, in Bunbury, Australia. This site was created and is maintained by Martyn Peter Wilkinson. A note (below) from Arthur Lucan and Kitty McShane from the
Belfast Hippodrome, dated 3 April 1925.
It reads - "Work well! Speak well! And you'll do well. Best wishes from Yours
faithfully, Arthur Lucan and Kitty McShane - COME OVER". The recipient is unknown.
1926
Arthur and Kitty open in a new touring show - "IRISH FOLLIES" - opening at the Palace Theatre, Southampton,
on 25 August 1926.
Arthur's mother, Lucy Ann Towle, dies of a heart attack on 4 November 1926, aged 71.
1929 Following the end of the "IRISH FOLLIES" show after over two year, Lucan and McShane star
in another review called - "PARIS 1929".
1934 Whilst touring various venues with their "MATCHSELLER"sketch, they learn that they had been chosen to appear
in the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium, on 8 May 1934.
