LUCAN AND McSHANE - RADIO CAREER 1940-1950

Lucan and McShane's radio career spanned some ten years, from 1940 to 1950.

Their first broadcast, for the BBC, was on 13 August 1940, on a Forces Programme, from the Empire Theatre,Chiswick. This featured the highly sucessful act they had been touring the variety theatres with - "OLD MOTHER RILEY COMES TO TOWN".

Another Forces Programme performance followed in November of the same year from the Garrison Theatre, as guests of Jack Warner (pictured below).

Numerous other appearances, at various venues around the country, followed during the war years to boost the population's moral. Famous co-stars of the time included Tommy Handley (pictured below), Anne Sheldon, Wilfred Pickles, Jesse Maththews, Tommy Trinder and Rob Wilton.

Hattie Jacques (pictured above), who appeared in 'Old Mother Riley Meets The Vampire' (1952), went on to star in several of the highly successful British "Carry On" films and was married to John Le Mesurier, who also appeared in 'Old Mother Riley Meets The Vampire', He went on to find fame as the mild mannered Sgt Wilson in the classic BBC TV comedy series " Dad's Army."


Lucan and McShane's final radio appearance was on 19 May 1950 - "FESTIVAL MUSICAL HALL"

First broadcast for the BBC Forces Programme on 13 August 1940. Broadcast of "Old Mother Riley Comes To Town", live from the Empire Theatre, Chiswick.

Guested on another Forces Programme, starring Jack Warner, from the Garrison Theatre, on 23 November 1940.

1941

"Old Mother Riley Takes To The Air". Another Forces Programme, broadcast between June and September 1941 on Saturday nights, and repeated on Sundays.

Here is a link Gilbert Wilson's Desert War Diary to the diary of a World War II veteran's account of the Western Desert conflict 1941-42.

It includes an entry on Christmas Day 1941, in which he which refers listening to the Forces Programme Old Mother Riley broadcast on his tank wireless.
