This is the only web resource solely dedicated to the memory of Arthur Lucan (1885 - 1954) and the famous music hall, pantomime, radio and film character which he created - Old Mother Riley.

Together with his wife, Kitty McShane (1897 - 1964), they were an incredibly successful double act who enjoyed enormous popularity between the 1930s and early 1950s.

He moved to Boston with his family when he was five years old. It was at the town's Shodfriars Hall (pictured below) - which housed a theatre - within sight of his home, where the young Arthur Towle first trod the boards.

Tivoli Theatre - Article from the 'Flashback' column of the Hull Daily Mail - Wednesday 13 February 2008

Crowds flocked to the Tivoli Theatre

[Features photograph of the Tivoli dated 1913.]

"...the photograph was taken by Victor Biggins, of Hull, the Kingston Variety Co. Ltd leased the theatre, and that the managing director is Harry Slingsby.
...the postmark on the back of the card is March 1, 1913, the year before war started.
The Tivoli (or to be more exact its site) has a long history, which according to the book 'Last Complete Performance' by Robert Curry (Hutton Press Ltd and Hull College of Further Education, 1992, £6.95), goes back to the middle of the 19th century.
It reads "Hull's newest ampitheatre was built at the corner of Paragon Street and South Street and was first opened to the public on October 12, 1846, with a military spectacle, 'The Wars Of The Punjab', circus performances and a farce entitled ' The Weaver Of Lyons'"
It was claimed the place could accomodate more than 3,000 people.
As years went by it underwent several changes of name, including the Royal Ampitheatre, the Queen's Theatre and the Royal Queen's Theatre.
More structural changes followed, and in 1871, says Mr Curry, the Imperial Hotel was built on the auditorium site and the stage part, from the western end adjoining South Street, became the fourth Theatre Royal built by Mr Sefton Parry in the style of London's Globe Theatre and opened on November 27 that year.
The Theatre Royal closed in February 1909 and in 1912 was adapted as the Tivoli Music Hall, opening on August bank holiday.
The bill on that occasion included the famous comedian Rob Wilton.
From the postmark date we have already been given, this picture could refer to that event with large crowds present."
