This is the only web resource solely dedicated to the memory of Arthur Lucan (1885 - 1954) and the famous music hall, pantomime, radio and film character which he created - Old Mother Riley. Together with his wife, Kitty McShane (1897 - 1964), they were an incredibly successful double act who enjoyed enormous popularity between the 1930s and early 1950s.
ARTHUR LUCAN - THE EARLY YEARS Arthur Lucan, who created the famous Irish washerwoman character 'Old Mother Riley', was born Arthur Towle on 16th September 1885 in the small village of Sibsey, near Boston, in Lincolnshire, England. He moved to Boston with his family when he was five years old. It was at the town's Shodfriars Hall (pictured below) - which housed a theatre - within sight of his home, where the young Arthur Towle first trod the boards. the building, called Tivoli House, is now the site of Skeltons bakery and cafe - a
memorial bust to him stands on the spot where he died.
